Gluten Free Easter Guide for Australia and New Zealand 2025
Easter 2025 is just around the corner, bringing with it the joy of indulging in delicious chocolate eggs, hot cross buns, and festive treats. But for those in Australia and New Zealand following a gluten-free diet—whether due to coeliac disease, gluten intolerance, or simply a lifestyle choice—finding safe and tasty options can sometimes be a challenge. Fortunately, more brands and supermarkets are catering to the gluten-free community than ever before, offering a variety of chocolate eggs, baked goods, and specialty Easter treats that everyone can enjoy without worry (hurrah!).
To make your Easter shopping easier, we’ve compiled a guide of some of the best gluten-free Easter products available in 2025, including where to find them and which stores stock them across Australia and New Zealand. Whether you’re looking for classic chocolate eggs, fun Easter bunnies, or the perfect gluten-free hot cross buns, this guide has got you covered!
To kick things off, here’s a simple step by step guide to assess if your Easter treats are safe to eat;
1. Look for Certified Gluten-Free Labels; In Australia and New Zealand, trusted certifications are the Coeliac Australia Endorsement Logo and the NZ Coeliac Society Endorsement. These indicate the product has been independently tested and meets their strict gluten-free standards.
2. Check for a ‘Gluten-Free’ Claim; Under Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) regulations, a product labeled "gluten-free" must contain no detectable gluten. If it says "gluten-free," it's safe for coeliacs.
3. Read the Ingredients List; Look for obvious gluten-containing ingredients such as Wheat, Barley, Rye and Oats*. 🚨 Note: Oats are not considered gluten-free in Australia and New Zealand due to potential cross-contamination and their natural protein, Avenin. For some people with coeliac disease, Avenin can trigger similar reactions to gluten. Learn more here.
4. Check for ‘May Contain’ Statements; Some products have advisory warnings like "May contain gluten" due to cross-contamination. While not mandatory, these warnings indicate a risk, so it's best to avoid them if you have coeliac disease.
