The Coles Vs Woolworths Gluten Free Halloween Treat Guide

Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s time to stock up on spooky treats! But for those of us with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease, finding safe and delicious gluten-free options can sometimes feel like trick-or-treating itself. Fear not! We’ve done the legwork for you by comparing gluten-free treats across Australia’s two biggest supermarket chains. Whether you’re preparing for a kids’ Halloween party or just want to enjoy the season’s sweets yourself, this guide will help you find the best gluten-free options!

Firstly, when it comes to avoiding gluten, clear labeling is crucial. Luckily in Australia, our labeling laws are pretty strict meaning it’s easier to determine what is gluten free! Any allergens should be highlighted in bold on the ingredients list or they should be listed as an allergen if the product has a “Allergy Advice” statement. One ingredient which often causes confusion is Glucose Syrup. This can be made from wheat and in the labelling, it can appear as Glucose Syrup (Wheat) but it is safe for people with coeliac disease! For clarity and peace of mind, none of the products in this list have a “May Contain” statement for gluten or wheat.

Gluten-Free Treats

Let’s talk variety. Whether you’re after classic sweets or lollies, chocolate bars, or spooky-themed treats, not every supermarket offers the same range of gluten-free goodies. Here’s a quick breakdown of what each store has in stock!

Sweets & Lollies

Coles has a range of own brand sweets / lollies which are gluten free! These include Party Mix / Sour Party Mix, Snakes and Cola Bottles! It’s rare to find gummy sweets which are gluten free so this is a great find for the coeliac sweet tooth out there! The only allergens listed are Milk and Soy.

Coles Sour Party Mix

Woolworths has a wide range of Chupa Chups products which are gluten free, including this Party Size “Incredible Chew”. Their Mix of Mini’s (including their classic lollipops and Mentos Mini’s) are also gluten free but contain Milk.

Savoury Snacks

Coles stocks all the usual suspects when it comes to gluten free savoury snacks but when it comes to something a little trick or treat themed (and something that’s a little healthier for you), the range from Cobs ticks all the boxes! They have a variety of flavours available from salted, cheese, salt and sweet and even a microwave at home butter flavour!

Cobs Popcorn - available at Coles

Woolworths have a great range of free from savoury snacks but have you tried Harvest Snaps by Calbee? They’re now available in salted, chilli, salt and vinegar and sour cream and chive flavours! Some of the range contains Milk and Soy but they’re all gluten free (hurrah!) and offer something a little different from your usual chips / crisps!

Chocolate

If you have a sweet tooth but you’re not a fan of lollies or sweets, then this next section is just for you - chocolate!

Coles have a variety of chocolate bars which are gluten free, but these two minis are very conveniently individually wrapped, perfect for Halloween parties or trick or treaters! Both the Candbury Flake and Fry’s Turkish Delight contain Milk and Soy but are gluten free!

Coles gluten free chocolates

Woolworths have a selection of chocolate treats from Pascall’s which are gluten free (including these Choc Mallow Bites - very on theme for Halloween!) and the absolute cult classic from Allen’s, their Freckles (who knew they were GF?)!

When it comes to gluten-free Halloween treats, each supermarket has its strengths. Both faired equally on lollies and sweets but if you’re looking for chocolates, Coles may be your best bet! For the savoury fans among us, you might be better off heading to Woolworths! Here’s hoping you enjoy a spooky but gluten-free Halloween!
